The concept of part is relative to that of entirety. It means that a part is a portion of the whole. Whether it is big or small, it is an organic component of the whole. The whole, big or small, can be divided into various parts. In other words, the whole is the sum of all the different parts. Within a certain part exists the relative whole. Those who wish to have understanding of a region or a part of the whole country must obtain, in their subconscious mind, an overall perception of the whole at a relatively higher level, and must consider the particular part as an organic component of the entirety. In such a country with a vast territory as China, there is obviously a diversity of geographical features, ethnic characters and folk customs in different areas or regions. A systematic and overall study over a certain region is imperative to disclose its rich cultural heritages, and will certainly lead to an intensified understanding at the national level. Historically, Chinese people have been keeping the tradition of pursuing a unified consensus over everything. In this sense, imperial systems and institutions must have been developed at the national level over several thousand years so as to form the major part of the nation’s cultural genes, which may be found even in a remote area as part of the entire cultural system. The author believes that even an area or a region is an entirety on its own. Nevertheless, it contains both local features and those from outside. The regional music research must not only pay attention to the entirety in a particular region and at a particular moment, but also grasp the overall concept at a higher level, and have deeper understanding of the traditional systems and institutions in history. In the course of examining a certain region, one must incorporate the practice of comparison and the theory of multi-dimension research in synchronic and diachronic ways into his or her work, and only in this way can deeper understanding of the music traditions in a particular area or region be properly obtained.
