In Ian McEwan＇ s Atonement, the frequent use of repetition is one of its outstanding features. Repetition in this novel provides a different way to understanding the text as it is seen as a returning instinct that compels people to go back to the past, an interpretation that bases itself on the logic of identity, and a construction that springs from the logic of difference. The discussion on repetition and its meanings in this novel is both an exploration of repetition as a device and a further research of McEwan＇ s Atonement.
