Habermas pointed out that British literary public sphere, the forerunner of public sphere, originated from the coffee houses in the British Republic. In this process,British writers constructed the "public opinion" function of British public sphere through their literary activities. They practiced this function on the issue of "A Proclamation for the Suppression of Coffee Houses", of which Andrew Marvell's A Dialogue Between the Two Horses is the typical example.
