The theraphosid Selenocsmia huwena was identified as a new species of family Theraphasidae in 1993, which lives in burrow in tropical areas of southern China. Selenocosmia huwena has a body length of 6—9 cm, and a body length which measures 912cm with the legs extended. This is the largest spider (the weight of a mature ♀322g,♂113g)in China. The spider rarely lives in regions of dense forest or heavy undergrowth, but prefer open areas on hillsides or the fringe of cultivated lands. The burrow usually has a loose webbing tube at the entrance. The construction of burrow is horizontal or at a slight angle, where the soil texture is clay and the soil moisture content is 21±2%. The pH of the soil is 53±01. After emergence, the 2nd instar spiderlings remained in the burrow for 3 to 5 days without adelphophagie behavior. When the 2nd instar spiderlings became the 3rd instar ones, the spiderlings dispered. The regression equation between the entrance diameter of the burrow and the weight of the spider is Y=e 04910 , r=08836, and the regression equation between the length and the weight is Y=e 00365x ,r=07170. Temperature had a great effect on spider activity and development, and decreased with low temperature (below 15℃). The suitable temperature range for the spider ranged between 20℃ and 30℃.
