1980年代末期，张光直先生在中文刊物上先后发表了两篇论述台湾海峡考古的文章，在学术界产生了深远影响。第一篇是1987年刊于《南方民族考古》创刊号的《中国东南海岸考古与南岛语族起源问题》，
The archaeology of Taiwan Strait Archaeology is important for understanding many issues in prehistory and early history of East Asia, Southeast Asian Islands, and the Pacific. In Particular, it holds keys for searching for the origins and expansions of the proto-Austronesians. The archaeology of the west side of the Taiwan Strait can be divided into four periods, reflecting the progress of the archaeological research since 1936. The main issues in the future are the origins of the early Neolithic cultures, the interaction between the coastal areas and inland in the late Neolithic Age and the relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait during the Bronze Age.
