摘要

Sylvia Plath's writings teem with self-awareness, female consciousness and political- historical dimensions. Reoccurring are violent images like war, the concentration camp, and descriptions about the Holocaust in her masterpieces such as "Daddy", "Lady Lazarus", and "The Munich Mannequins". As Plath's autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar unrolls before us the political-historical climate of her day, and shows her dissatisfaction with the then political milieu. Positively influenced by Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs, etc., Plath is an expert in presenting with imagery contents unspeakable and those historical facts defying a faithful telling. Her historical consciousness goes through her writings and she particularly values writing as a serious response to historical events. Plath intends to alert us to moral numbness and political-historical amnesia, which is a vivid expression of her commitment as a writer.
