Ink handwritings are often seen on remains of the marine trade activities during the Song and Yuan dynasties. To study these handwritings may help to understand many specific issues and facilitate rela- tive researches. A review of previous studies of ink handwriting shows that some research results have been achieved in Japan while little has been done in China. This paper analyses the two handwritten ink charac- ters "lin shang" on the wreck remain discovered during the second excavation of the Nanhai No 1 in 2011. A preliminary conclusion on the definition, identification and functions of ink handwritings is withdrawn. The study on ink handwriting may also help to analyse the hierarchical relationship amongst the staff members of the merchant ships during the Song and Yuan Dynasties.
