Objective To investigate the radioprotective effect of two derivatives of cysteine. Methods A 30-day survival assay and the hematological, immunological parameters were adopted to explore radioprotective effect. Results Mice were treated with the two compounds once daily for three consecutive days before irradiation. When the mice were treated with continuous intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg · kg-1 body weight of compound 1, the survival rate was 25% higher than that in the radiation group, and the protection index was 1.34. White blood cells ( WBC ) , the number of nucleated cells in bone marrow ( BMNC ) , DNA content of femur were significantly different from those of the blank group. When the mice received continuous intragastric administration of 400 mg · kg-1 body weight of compound 2, the survival rate was 33.3% higher than that of the radiation group, and the protection index was 1. 36. The number of nucleated ceils in BMNC, WBC, spleen colony-forming units (CFU-S) and the thymus index, spleen index were significantly different from those in the blank group. Conclusion The two derivatives of cysteine can reduce the radiation-induced injury in mice.
