Depicting mentors is one of the main characteristics in Saul Bellow' s Bildungsroman, and Seize the Day is a case in point. This article first analyzes the symptom of the protagonist Wilhelm' s predicaments, the powerful guidance by the mentor Doctor Tamkin, and the mentor' s explicit function. It then points out the mentor' s implicit function at the literary level: it not only reveals the American Jews' disquieting living conditions in the 1950s, but also sends out Bellow' s signal to call upon the American Jews to affirm their Jewish identity. The work conveys Bellow' s strong desire to have the "prosoeial" concept estab- lished by the American Jews. It not only embodies Bellow' s objection to the then "New Sensibility" movement and the waste- land concept, but also expresses Bellow' s positive and optimistic notion of writing; it not only signifies Bellow' s persistent pursuit of humanism, but also renders Bellow the spokesman of the New York Jewish intellectuals. Doctor Tamkin' s guidance acts as the appropriate guideline for the then American Jews.
