Objective: To determine whether antioxidant defenses might be altered, we evaluated plasma antioxidant concentrations in children with Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. Methods: In 23 child were rolled to study (8 with Crohn disease, 7 with ulcerative colitis and 8 healthy child), anthropometric measurements and disease activity scores were obtained. The concentrations plasma ascorbic acid, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, and α-tocopherol were measured. Results: The children with Crohn disease were malnourished compared with the ulcerative colitis and control groups. Children with Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis had low plasma ascorbic acid and increased glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, and α-tocopherol concentrations compared with control subjects. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that children with Crohn disease have alterations in circulating antioxidant defenses, possibly related to a general of this disease.
