Seagrass bed provides a variety of ecological services and economic values, and its ecological restoration has been one of the important coastal environmental engineering. However, the ecological functions and protections of Zostera japonica are controversial focuses between the western and eastern scientists. Z. japonica, known as dwarf eelgrass, shows obvious differences in morphology with other species of the same genus and the latitude effect of growth and propagation, evolving a series of envi- ronmental adaptation mechanisms. The resource distribution presents the opposite trends in the east and west coasts of the Pacific. Z. japonica has been a threatened species in native area, but it is recog nized as an invasive species in the coastal areas of North America. The expanded distribution has been bringing negative impacts on the local ecosystem and economic development. Closely tracking Z. ja ponica resources dynamic, screening its ecological functions and the development of scientific manage- ment measures will be the focuses of future research.
