The intangible cultural elements occupy a large proportion among the elements of cultural landscape. This paper studied the mature modes of intangible cultural elements protection in Japan. Based on the review of related literature and comparative analysis, this study clarifies the formation and connotation of the two protection modes, namely "Mind and Consciousness Transmission" and "Model Transmission". The former is closely linked to local social life, emphasizing the importance of "Mind and Consciousness" in the process of inheritance; while the latter is mainly used to protect technologies or arts those has risen to become independent from everyday life, emphasizing the content and form. The former relatively excludes interventions of outsiders, while the latter usually relies on government policies and the legal system. Both the two modes play important roles in the protection of ICH in Japan. This dichotomous perspective provides some inspiration to the protection of intangible cultural elements of Chinese cultural landscape.
