Objective To understand the level of serum uric acid among residents in island areas, and to explore the association among the serum uric acid level and hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia. Methods We analyzed the data regarding serum uric acid, blood pressure, blood lipids and blood sugar in 13,216 island inhabitants who visited the People's Hospital of Dongtou County for physical examination from 2011 to 2012.Results The level of serum uric acid was significantly higher in males than in females (325.34 ± 71.2 μmol/L vs 281.1 ± 61.5 μmol/L,P 〈 0.001),and the levels of both genders reached a peak at the age of 40-49 years. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 17.2%,and hyperuricemia was significantly more prevalent in males than in females (23.3% vs 8.9%,P〈0.001).The prevalence of hyperuricemia increased with age in females (P 〈 0.001),but no statistically significant difference was found in males with different ages (P 〉0.05).The prevalence of hypertension was 11.4%,and hypertension was significantly more prevalent in males than in females (15.0% vs 6.6%,P 〈 0.001).The inhabitants with hyperuricemia had significantly higher prevalence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia than those with normal serum uric acid (P〈0.001).Conclusions The island inhabitants have high levels of serum uric acid and high prevalence of hyperuricemia.Hyperuricemia is correlated with high prevalence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia.
