Based on the case study of the overseas emigrants from Kan Town of Guangdong Province, this article employs the concept of'moral economy'proposed by Scott to explain the relations between moral tradition, the motive of social status compensation for emigrants, and cultural remittances. The long-standing interactions between emigrants and their hometown gradually evolve a moral norm of conduct based on Chinese gentry tradition. We further discuss the moral relationship between remittances and compensation and the risk of fracture it might face. We conclude that such transnational practices based on traditional morality not only allow the emigrants to be compensated for their social status, but also make up for deficiency of the public goods and welfare of the villages due to the inefficiency of the local government and facilitate the achievement of the collective social goals in the hometown of the overseas emigrants.
