This paper explicates the relations between linguistic forms, functions and ideologies by focusing exclusively on the representations of exchange rate changes in the coverage of the Sino-US exchange rate debate by China Daily and The New York Times. The basic assumptions are that each linguistic form has its own functions in news discourse, and that the choice of these forms may communicate significant ideological meanings. Adopting a corpus-assisted discourse study approach, this paper has revealed that both newspapers represent exchange rate changes in a way that is consistent with the dominant neoliberal ideology as well as their own ideological stance towards the issue.
