摘要
"格物致知"在《礼记·大学》中被提出,汉唐对之进行注疏,宋明注重义理诠释。宋元时期,"格物致知"与自然科学逐渐关联。明清之时由于受到西学影响,格致之学受到关注,在晚清,"格致"成为西学science的译词,学校也开设格致课程,课程内容主要为科学技术。后又以"格致"与"科学"混用,最终,"科学"作为science的正式译词得到了公认和广泛使用,"格致"或"格物致知"与"科学"又分了手。对这一历史过程的梳理,可以明确"格物致知"涵义的演变历程,可以分辨它与"科学"之间的关系,这对我们今天正确理解"格物致知"和科学及科学教育都是十分重要的。而且,对于我们如何向西方学习,如何正确对待中国传统文化,也都具有借鉴作用。
"Ge Wu Zhi Zhi" was originally put forward in ((The Great Learning)), which was later explained in the Han and Tang dynasties and defined in the Song and Ming dynasties. It was not un- til the Song and Yuan dynasties did "Ge Wu Zhi Zhi" start to connect with science. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, thanks to the influence of Western Civilization, the school of "Ge Zhi" received fully attention. In late Qing Dynasty, "Ge Zhi" was translated to "Science"; schools set up courses of "Ge Zhi" to teach students science and technology. Later "Ge Zhi" and "Ke Xue" became compatible in meaning. In the end, "Ge Zhi" or "Ge Wu Zhi Zhi" were differentiated from "Ke Xue" ; and "Ke Xue" became the official translation of "Science", which was acknowledged and widely used. Through the analysis of the above history, the evolvement of the meaning and defi- nition of "Ge Wu Zhi Zhi" is cleared out, so is its distinction from "Ke Xue". The analysis is of great significance to nowadays correct comprehension of "Ge Wu Zhi Zhi" as well as science and science technology. In addition, it serves as a source of reference when we learn from the West and treat Chinese traditional culture in a proper way.
