Objective To report the survival rate and outcome after cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an intensive care unit, and the relation between successful CPR and patients with acute illness or chronic medical conditions. Methods We present a retrospective review of all patients undergoing CPR in an intensive care unit during 5 years period(1995~1999).Results One hundred fifty three CPR records were reviewed, patient mean age was 59 years old.Although 39(25 5%) patients were initially resuscitated, only 10(6 5%) ultimately survived to hospital discharge. The patients who were successfully resuscitated were different from the patients who were not successfully resuscitated in age and duration of CPR,but sex and primary diagnoses were similar among them. The primary contributing diagnoses at time of admission were cardiovascular-cerebrovascular disease in 44(28 8%),infectious disease in 26(17 0%),respiratory disease in 14(9 2%),malignancy in 14(9 2%).Conclusion Age was independently associated with outcome after CPR.Cardiovascular-cerebrovascular disease and infection disease were common among patients who required CPR in ICU.
