The roads connecting different regions of China and its neighboring countries have exerted a lasting, extensive and profound impact on China and its regions and society ever since the ancient times due to the complex mountain geographical conditions in southwest China.Previous studies of ancient roads in the southwest were mostly confined to the framework of administrative divisions, with a focus on cross-border commercial roads. However, studies are fewer in number on the effects and influences of the roads on the central region of Yun-gui plateau in the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties, the nationalization integration process of political and economical development, the relationship between this process and the cultural corridor and the integrity of this cultural space. This study, with a focuses on the Southern silk road and the Borderland corridor of Miao ethnical group, essentially sorted out the different characteristics and influences of the "commercial road"and the "official road";and for the first time used the term of "linear cultural space",to emphasize the overall connection of politics, economics and culture with the road defining across administrative divisions.
