Most of the existing research on the transportation and city development in ancient China focuses on chronological and local issues, and the macroscopic analysis of a long period of time and a full range of aspects is obviously insufficient. This paper discusses the transportation and urban development in ancient China in a macroscopic sense, and holds that the change of transportation network is an important reason for the formation and development of urban system. First, the construction of the distinctive post road transportation network was crucial to the formation and operation of the administrative city system during the ancient time. Second, the grand canal city development driven by the rise of grand canal traffic since the Sui and Tang dynasties promoted the further improvement of the administrative city system, showing the new trend of the evolution of the urban system in ancient China. Third, the rise of long-distance commercial traffic since the middle of the Ming dynasty has driven the significant development of coastal port cities along the river as well as the sea, which indicates another brand-new change of the national urban system.
