Daidzein(Da)was added to the diet of Shaoxing ducks at the dosage of 3 mg·kg -1 (Da 1)and 5 mg·kg -1 (Da 2)during the late stage of egg production cycle. The egg laying rate increased by 11 57%(P<0 01)in Da 1 and 13 33%(P<0 01) in Da 2;the mean egg weight increased apparently in both treatments;the daily egg mass significantly improved by 13 13%(P<0 01)and 16 61%(P<0 01)in Da 1 and Da 2;the feed/egg ratio markedly decreased 9 40%(P<0 01)and 11 41%(P<0 01)respectively.Moreover,Shaoxing ducks treated with 5 mg·kg -1 daidzein had apparently higher mean egg weight and daily egg mass than that with 13 mg·kg -1 daidzein. The results suggest that daidzein can evidently promote egg laying performance of Shaoxing ducks during the later stage of egg production cycle and this action is dosage dependent.Daidzein treatment markedly prevented body weight loss of Shaoxing ducks and increased the weight of ovary compared with the control, but the number of large follicles had no change.Da 1 significantly increased serum levels of GH by 37 5%(P<0 05)but not IGF?1,while,Da 2 significantly increased serum levels of both GH and IGF?1 by 40 00%(P<0 05)and 10 54%(P<0 05)respectively.There were no changes observed in serum levels of E 2 in both experimental groups. The significant increase of serum GH and IGF?1 levels demonstrated that daidzein can improve the capability of reproduction in Shaoxing ducks by regulating endocrine functions.
