This paper discussed the oases in the arid region of China.The roles of oases in the social-economic development in arid regions were fully described.The regionalization of arid land system was studied.The oasses were classified and the characteristics of oases were recognized according to their structures and functions.Finally,the development of oases in the 21 stcentury and the approaches to realize such development were discussed,in the point of view of constructing efficient and sustainable oasis systems.
