The men of letters in Song Dynasty were known for their unconstrained spirit and behavior, 'unconstrained spirit and behavior' here conveys two kinds of meaning. Firstly, those scholars are said to have superb talent, apt in poem composing and drawing. Secondly, their innermost feeling was overexcessive and they conserved certain subtle relationship with the female sex. The former embodies their elegant and unconventional style of conduct, and the latter reflects their vulgar taste for life. The combination of these two envisages the distinctive features of those scholars and exerts profound impact upon the poetry in the Song Dynasty.
