Unprecedented chance and challenges have been presented to its development of animal husbandry as China joins the World Trade Organization (WTO) . Agricultural products and food, such as meat, fish and shrimp, and honey, exported to U.S., Japan and European Countries, are being rejected, detained, returned, claimed an indemnity or even noticed of termination of the trade as contamination of pathogenic microbes and drug residues is suspected. This not only leads to a tremendous economic loss, but also ruins our international trade prestige. In the light of developing national e-conomy after China's entry into WTO, National Natural Science Foundation of China should set 'FOOD SAFETY' as a subdiscipline to create favourable research conditions for scientists, who are interested in basic research on food safety and to whom macro - strategy and regulation should be provided . It is a matter of great urgency to strengthen basic research on food safety, as only after profound and extensive basic research on food safety has been conducted, could problems related to food safety be thoroughly solved to adapt our animal husbandry to the new conditions after China' s entry into WTO.
