摘要
自二十世纪四十年代以来美国出现了一股反对天主教外来移民力量,这股力量在五十年代初合流为"一无所知党"。该组织的成员主要是新教徒。其在鼎盛时期左右了美国一些地区的政治生活,成为一股不可忽视的政治力量;他们以维护美国主流文化不受外来移民的破坏为己任;为实现目标,他们甚至不惜付诸暴力。其兴起的主要诱因在于应对外来天主教徒对美国社会的冲击以维护新教徒主导的主流社会价值。
In the 1940s, a force opposing the Catholic immigrants emerged in the United Sates. And in the 1950s, the force was integrated into the Know-Nothing party. Its members are mainly Protestants. At its peak, the party dominated the politics of some areas of the United States, becoming a political force that cannot be ignored. They hold that their duty is to maintain the mainstream culture against being destroyed by those Catholic immigrants. To achieve the goal, they even resort to violence. The main causes for its rise are found to be responding to the foreign Catholic immigrants and maintaining the Protestant-dominated social mainstream values.
