摘要
文章就13种已编制主题索引的检索刊物进行抽样分析。通过分析每篇文献的标引款目数（标引深度），以及每一款目。标引词数（索引款目的专指度），提出了标引深度的涵义。作者指出，理想的主题索引既要提供专指性的主题内容，又要照顾网罗性的需要。
A sampling analysis is made of 13 retrieval publications with subiect in- dexes. Through analysing the number of entries per item （indexing depth） and the number of descriptors per entry （specificity of index）, the meaning of indexing depth is clarified. The authors point out that an ideal subject index should not only provide the specificity of subject matter but also consider the needs of exhaustibility.
