Last year, Finnish architect Marco Casagrande won the European Prize for Architecture, which honors architects whose work contributes not just to the built environment, but also to humanity more generally. In the AW Interview, Casagrande locates his transition from traditional to critical architecture praxis both geographically--a childhood in the Finnish countryside--and ideologically, asserting the ultimate reality of nature. His encounter with Chinese culture by way of Taiwan has also desicively shaped his practice. Casagrande advocates 'urban acupuncture' in post-industrial cities. In keeping with theories of Chinese traditional medicine, urban acupucturists treat localized blockages in order to bring relief to the entire city-organism. The goal is to catalyze social change through smallscale interventions.
