Teeth are among the symbols of social civilization. The aesthetic conception of teeth as represented in “Odes of Wei: The Duke's Bride,”“Odes of Wei: Bamboo,” and “Odes of Yong: The Rats” from The Book of Songs is mostly identical with our modem understanding of the beauty of teeth, and is consistent with the value of modem ecological aesthetics. The aesthetic conception of teeth in The Book of Songs was distorted because of the errors in the commentaries and interpretation of important words and sentences in Qing Dynasty. The authentic historical truth of teeth civilization in the Spring and Autumn Period as depicted in The Book of Songs is one that emphasizes the aesthetic preference for the symmetry of the teeth arch, the crystal-like whiteness of the teeth, and the orderly arrangement of teeth. It encourages the harmony between the teeth and the natural surroundings. It advocates the practice to compare one' s teeth to one' s morality and to see the teeth as a symbol of one' s moral integrity. These three claims together are the aesthetic values of teeth in The Book of Songs.
