The term "Shasu" originally designates "Bedouin" outside Transjordan, and later generally refers to "Bedouin". It was known as early as in the Old Kingdom though it did not become common until the New Kingdom period. Linguistic considerations indicate it was probably derived from an Egyptian word which means "wandering about" in English. These people comprised a social class with military background which embraced varying modes of life, settlement or nomad, and yet did not constitute an ethnic unity. They appeared in Egyptian society partly as captives, partly as mercenaries or robbers. The phrase " land of Shasu of Yahweh" expresses the close relationship between Shasu and Israelites.
