The practice of mixed-use development, one of the main characteristics of traditional urban structures, remains common in Hang Kong, but this is not true of new development. The unique quality of Hang Kong is constantly under threat in the large urban redevelopments currently undertaken. In recent decades, Hang Kong has been rapidly transforming and forever losing its unique characters. Replacing the city of collective spaces and community neh, vorks into the city of private icons, so the public space is now redefined as private or lost space. In this paper, we focus on Lee Tung Street, known as Wedding Card Street, as an example of the contradictions between the government redevelopment and local protection work. We will illustrate how preservation of streets like Lee Tung Street can enhance local economy, reinforce community, promote tourism and contribute to overall sustainability of Hang Kong.
