Objective To know about critical thinking disposition among 7-year program students in colleges and universities of Chinese medicine, and to evaluate function and influence of CBL teaching of surgery of integrated Chinese and Western medicine on them. Methods 135 students of the 7-year program were selected and divided into two groups. 68 were in the LBL group and 67 in the CBL group. Before and after the course teaching, they were given the questionnaire survey of critical thinking disposition inventory (CTDI-CV). End-term theory test and clinical thinking test were conducted. Students' scores and scoring frequency distribution were observed. Results Students' total scores on CTDI-CV before and after the course study in both groups reflected no clear significance, and there was no obvious difference in frequency distribution (P〉0.05), in the medium range. After the course study, students in the CBL group scored higher than before and than those students in the LBL group. They also scored higher on theoretical examination compared with students in the other group, showing a significant difference (P〈 0.05). Conclusion Critical thinking disposition of graduate students of Chinese medicine is generally in the medium range. CBL teaching of surgery of integrated Chinese and Western medicine can help foster their critical thinking ability and increase their clinical thinking ability. CTDI-CV can serve as an effective means to evaluate teaching quality of medical education.
