Both Plum in the Golden Vase and A Dream of Red Mansions give more weight to the female sex, which has led to many seholars'researches on female consciousness. But the comparative study in this aspect has been seldom done, so it is significant to make a contrastive analysis of these two novels from the clandestine love affairs. The description of clandestine love affairs reflects the awakening of women's self- consciousness in the conflicts between the individual and the society, and human being and nature. In Plum in the Golden Vase, facing the natural carnal desire, women sink into natural instincts or meld themselves into the society. While in A Dream of Red Mansions, girls and women are differentiated obviously. Girls are always versatile, natural and beautiful, and have pure and fine emotions. They have subjective consciousness, but they cannot get rid of the tragic destiny in the feudal society. Women become the symbol of various desires, and they barter sexual favor for high positions and great wealth, and the awakening of self-con- sciousness cannot be found in them.
