Cynthia Ozick, a distinguished Jewish American woman writer, creates several characters who are confused about their gender identities in Heir to the Glimmering World. In submission to the gender regulation, the female subject forms critical consciousness about identity and attempts to find her way out. The female subject challenges social norms, imitates male's gender identity and reverses the myth of stable identity. The male subject reveals femininity, transgresses gender prohibition and constructs a living subject. These characters' gender performativity reconfigures the mapping of postmodern identity concept characterized by its rupture, instability, indeterminacy and multiplicity.
