【Objective】 To observe the expression and clinical role of p-STAT3 and MMP-2 and 9 in the tissue of nasal polyps and to investigate their relationship in the development of nasal polyps so as to provide help and new ideas for clinical treatment of nasal polyps. 【Methods】 The expressions of p-STAT3 and MMP-2 and 9 were detected in the tissue of nasal polyps and inferior turbinate by routine pathologic and immunohistochemical methods. A total of 45 patients received nasal endoscopic surgery in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Affiliated Hospital of Weifang Medical University from May 2008 to April 2013(35 cases in nasal polyp group and 10 cases in the inferior turbinate mucosa group). 【Results】 The expression rates of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were 68.6%(24/35) and 82.9%(29/35) in the nasal polyp group and 20%(2/10) and 20%(2/10) in the inferior turbinate mucosa group, respectively. There was obvious difference between both groups(P〈0.05). The expression rate of p-STAT3 was 71.4%(25/35) and 0.0% in the nasal polyp group and the inferior turbinate mucosa group respectively, there was a statistical difference between both groups(P〈0.05). There were positive correlations between p-STAT3 and both MMP-2 and 9(r = 0.278 and 0.312, P〈0.05). 【Conclusions】 The high expressions of p-STAT3 and MMP-2 and 9 in nasal polyps and positive correlations illustrate they all play important roles in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps and can be used as markers of clinical treatment for nasal polyposis.
