Since ancient times, Shandong peninsula has been an important sea salt production base in China. Shihe saltern, in the east of Shandong peninsula, has lived more than six hundred years, providing salt for local residents. In early Qing Dynasty, the geographical position and area of Shihe saltern changed greatly in the trend of cutting down and merging saltworks. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the saltern changed again at the background of building Qingdao-Jinan Railway. Meanwhile, the production technology constantly renovated, and the scale expanded continuously. All changes mentioned above had an influence on the condition of transportation and marketing in Shihe saltern.
