Objective To investigate the expression of tumor-associated macrophages(TAMs) in human papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC) and the role of TAMs in invasion and metastasis of PTC. Methods Eighty patients who underwent surgeries after being diagnosed with PTC from Oct 2010 to Oct 2013 were included. Their paraffin-embedded tumor tissues were investigated using immunohistochemistry(IHC) and the clinical characteristics according to TAMs density was evaluated. Results The TAM densities varied from 3-66/HP, and tumors in the high density group were larger than those in the low density group [(1.6±0.1) cm vs(1.0±0.1) cm,P〈0.01]. Meanwhile, in the high density group, the tumor infiltration was deeper, and more lymph node metastasis and the number of post-phase Ⅲ cases were found. Conclusion TAMs has an effect on promoting the growth of the PTC, and plays an important role in invasion and metastasis of PTC.
