Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody(ANCA) is a biomarker of ANCA associated vasculitis. Recentstudies have demonstrated that ANCA is not only a biological marker, but also plays an important pathogenic role.ANCA can activate neutrophils, activate complement, and induce the damage of neutrophils to endothelial cells. Onthe other hand, the pathogenic role of ANCA is also influenced by the immunological characteristics of the ANCAitself. Thus, ANCA may serve as a potential target for the treatment of ANCA associated vasculitis in the future. Theprogress of the research about the pathogenesis of ANCA in recent years is to be reviewed in this paper.
