Differences in task condition influence task complexity, resulting in differences in complexity, accuracy and fluency of oral performance. This experimental study analyzes 36 Chinese EFL learners’ linguistic features in fluency, complexity and accuracy and their holistic scores when they perform monologic and dialogic tasks, and explores the interactive effects between task condition, oral performance and test scores. The following findings are yielded.First, when performing the dialogic task,Chinese EFL learners improve their language in accuracy and fluency, while both positive and negative effects are found on complexity.Second, when language ability is tested with the task as an elicitation device, the task condition does not influence test scores.Third, the monologic task has higher predictive power of score than the dialogic task does, and among the three dimensions of oral performance, fluency is the best predictor of test scores.
