Translation is a social activity influenced by many factors including ideology, and the translator’s ethnic ideology also affects his/her translation of ethnic-themed novels. This paper takes the ethnic-themed novel Last Quarter of the Moon as the object, trying to study how the translator Bruce Humes’ ideology is reflected in translation process. By interviewing the translator and reading his blogs, we firstly construct his ethnic ideology based on his life experiences and academic interests. Then, we discuss how his ethnic ideology affects the translation process from four perspectives: the selection of the original novel, the choice of general translation strategies, the translation of ethnic-specific vocabulary, and the translation of typical characters’ speeches. Finally, we conclude that the translator’s ethnic ideology has greatly influenced his translation of this novel, and contributed a lot to its success.
