Objective To investigate the subjective aesthetic evaluation of upper lip positions in a smile by orthodontic patients, and to determine whether the patient's age and gender were influential factors in the aesthetic assessment, so as to provide reference for clin- ical orthodontic practice. Methods A frontally posed smile photograph of a man and that of a woman were changed by adjusting the position of their upper lips with Photoshop 7.0. A series of 11 pictures were developed for males and females, respectively. Then an e- lectronic questionnaire was designed and administered to investigation. 300 subjects included in the study were all orthodontic patients from the Stomatology Hospital of Shandong University. All the subjects were asked to evaluate each image according to their own aes- thetic standards and choose the top 3 most-favored pictures for each gender. Results were statistically analyzed. Results There were statistically significant differences among different age groups (P〈0.05). Compared with the young-aged group( 18-30 years old), the young and middle-aged groups (31-40 years old) and the middle-aged group (41-59 years old) preferred lower upper lip position. There was no significant difference between male and female patients when selecting the top 3 most-favored frontally posed smile(P〉0.05). Conclusions The aesthetic evaluation of lip positions by orthodontic patients is influenced by age. Orthodontists should pay attention to the aesthetic expectations of patients at different ages during orthodontic treatment.
