Fourteen cases of brain stem hemorrhage hospitalized in our hospital since 1984 through 1988, among which 13 were evidenced by CT scanning. The most common locations of the hemorrhages were in the pons, but less common in the midbrain. Hemorrhage in the me- dulle oblongata were rare. Twelve cases were male, two were female. The age range was 17--75 years. Nine cases were older than 40 years, five were younger than 40. The main cause of the hemorrhages were hypertension and arteriosclerosis. Only in a few cases the causes were vascular malformation and other diseases. In the majority of cases the attack occurred during the day, after some physical exertion or emotional stress, but not all cases had a rapid and vigorous onset. The prognosis were not very bad in all cases. All patients experienced headache and dizziness. In the majority of cases, unconciousness occured with the progress of the hemorrhages only a few cases remained concious from the begining to the end. One half of these patients suffered from an alternating paralysis, the other half suffered from a quadriplegia. The factors affecting the prognosis of brain stem hemorrhages were discussed.
