By using ERPs technique, this paper investigated the locus and time course of L1 automatic activation in L2 words processing in an L2-only context by Chinese EFL learners.Based on BIA+and RHM models, this paper further proposed an EHM theoretical model to account for the features and mechanism of L1 automatic activation. The findings are as follows:1)in terms of locus,L1 automatic activation took place at the conceptual, lexical and sub-lexical levels. That is to say,L2 words processing was accompanied with multi-level L1 automatic activation. In addition, the strength of activation at the sub-lexical level was asymmetric in that the activation of the final character was stronger than that of the first one.2)In terms of time course,L1 automatic activation started at the early stages during L2 processing and lasted to the late stages. The L2wordforms sequentially activated the concepts, the corresponding L1 word forms, and the final and the first character at the sub-lexical level. The EHM model proposed by this paper can better account for the features and mechanism of L1 automatic activation during L2 word processing of Chinese EFL learners.
