摘要
《说文·衣部》:"表,上衣也……古者衣裘,故以毛为表。"此条说解前后不可通,致"表"的本义不可知。今悉心解读徐锴《说文解字系传》本条"臣锴曰",即可发现徐锴所据原本《说文》训语非"上衣",而当是"衣上",指皮衣上的毛;并有七条理据证成其说。
The volume of yi( 衣)in Shuowen Jiezi(《说文解字》) said that the original meaning of biao is the jacket, which was made up of animal hides in ancient China, and then its surface was furs. But in fact this explanation itself is illogical, so the original meaning of biao(表) can not be ascertained. The author of this article carefully read the editorial notes by Xu Kai( 徐锴) in his Shuowen Jiezi Xizhuan(《说文解字系传》, and then found that the explaining term referred by Xu Kai in the original text of Shuowen Jiezi is not the jacket but the surface of clothing, which means furs on the fur coat. And we also have seven evidences to confirm this point.
