Genglubu is a sailing guidebook and valued historical archive about South China Sea history and culture, which was recorded by the eastern coastal fishermen in Hainan Province—represented by Tanmen( 潭门) fishermen—in the long-term practice to developed the South China Sea and its islands. Through researching Genglubu, not only we can prove that the Chinese fishermen were the first to develop and manage the islands in South China Sea,but also can find fishermen groups—who aside from fishery production also did commercial trade—had been maintaining close and frequent trade and cultural interaction with Southeast Asian countries in history. At the same time, researching and investigating the Genglubu and the history as well as culture of these fishermen have an important reference value to understand and deal with the conflicts encountered by Chinese fishermen in South China Sea.
