Objective To evaluate the effects of continuing motivational interviewing after discharge on medica- tion adherence in patients with depression. Methods We recruited 164 patients with depression who were hospital- ized in psychiatric ward of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University. Patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group(79 cases) and the control group(76 cases). The experimental group received increased numbers of motivational interviewing after discharge according to patients' medication adherence. The control group received three times of motivational interviewing before discharge, regular health education and telephone follow-up. Data of medication adherence were collected at baseline, l,3 and 6 months after discharge. Results There were no significant differences in general information and medication adherence between two groups at 1 month after discharge (P〉0.05). But medication adherence of the experimental group at 3 and 6 months after discharge was 92.41% and 96.20%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group(81.58%,28.95%)(P〈0.05). Medication adher- ence scores of patients in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P〈0.05). Conclusion Motivational interviewing can effectively improve medication adherence of patients with depression. Motivational interviewing after discharge will provide patients with continuing nursing service and have a better long-term effect in improving medication adherence.
