Objective: To analyze the current layout of China pharmaceutical RD innovation, so as to provide references for investors and government. Methods: Based on Geo DA system, 31 provinces in China's Mainland were selected as observation units. The number of drug patents was selected as proxy variant to measure innovation output. Results: The clustering propensity of regional pharmaceutical RD innovation in China was presented in the patent visible map. The provincial RD innovation with significantly positive spatial autocorrelation was identified by Moran's I index. In addition, the Moran scatter plot showed High-High and Low-Low differentiation of the innovation clusters. Conclusion: China regional pharmaceutical RD innovation exhibited unbalanced distribution and tended to cluster in space. Most innovation behaviors occurred in eastern coastal areas. These findings will help to find the geographic features of China regional pharmaceutical RD innovation so as to make a better decision about the regional innovation development planning and RD investment.
