Chinese American Sinophone Literature between the 1950 s and the 1970 s initiates the writing about western cities, but the images of those cities are often negative and they seem to bring traumatizing or demoralizing experiences to Chinese immigrants. This finds an echo in Chinese Urban Literature, however, different from the latter,American city writing foregrounds the dichotomy between America and China rather than that between the city and the country, hence, there occurs a tension between the writers' nationality and the modernity of American cities. As a matter of fact, there is a collective disillusionment of American modernity in Chinese American Sinophone Literature, which can be mainly accounted for by the writers' prevailing nationalism at that time.
