Taking road green spaces in Haidian District,Beijing,as the research objects, the paper comparatively analyzed the mulching characteristics of growing and non-growing seasons and their influencing factors. The preliminary conclusions were reached from the results:(1) between two seasons, the plant configuration modes remained unchanged while there were large changes in surface mulching characteristics, reflected as 12% increase in the greenbelt area under the composite mulching patterns in non-growing season than the growing one;(2) there was a high increase in the rate of surface coverage on road green space as a whole, leading to the drop in the rate of shrub-grass coverage and the decrease in the soil-shrub-grass coverage;(3) the shrub-grass and surface coverage rate in different areas had opposite amplitude of variation for non-growing season and growing season, and became converged in the non-growing season finally;(4) for plant configurations,a variety of broadleaf arbor-shrub configuration contributed largely to the surface mulching in the nongrowing season, and the litters in the mulching made the largest contribution to the surface mulching in the non-growing season. On the whole, problems of bare soilon the road green space are also prominent in Beijing Haidian Distric,we need to change the patterns of traditional green space maintenance, vigorously promote the application of organic mulch, enhance vatious road green space functions of dust catching, water holding, and promoting plant growth.
