Recent studies have shown that a new subset of CD8^+ T cells named as CXCR5^+ CD8^+ T cells has been found around B cell follicles. This subset is also known as follicular cytotoxic T cells(TFC), and has aroused widespread interests. So far, some of the processes and mechanisms of TFC's involvement in the germinal center immune response and its role within it are not fully understood. In this article, we summarized results of all domestic and foreign studies on the phenotypes, physiological functions, and moderating factors of maturation and differentiation of TFC, as well as their roles and clinical significance in the HIV infection. The function of TFC cells has shown a broader application prospects, and we believe that the further research on TFC may find another important cell therapy on the control or cure of chronic viral infection or tumor.
