Metaphors play an important role of understanding and constructing experiences in the target domain through those in the source domain. Astrological metaphors are produced when ancient people tried to understand the sky above by imagination, and different cultures have engendered different astrological metaphors. Thus it is rather difficult to translate astrological metaphors in classical Chinese poems due to cultural differences. This paper, based on cognitive translation hypothesis featuring different mapping conditions, analyzes the English translations of astrological metaphors in classical Chinese poems, and finds that cognitive translation hypothesis cannot fully explain existing astrological metaphor translations in classical Chinese poems because it doesn't take into consideration the leading roles and specific functions of those metaphors in specific textual context.
