Through sampling and monitoring of dusts in the field of thermal spraying, the mass concentration, particles size distribution, micro - morphology and composition of the dusts are analyzed and the potential hazards of these dusts are evaluated. The results show that the dust concentrations in the thermal spray workshops are generally higher than the national standard limits. These dusts distribute in a wide range of size, including lots of miero/nano - particles, difficult to be cleared and suspended in the air of the workshop for a long time, due to their light weight and small gravity effect. A variety of metal elements are contained in these dusts, including some heavy metals, such as chromium, nickel and copper. These characteristics of dusts in the thermal spray process determine the seriousness of occupational hazards. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures to reduce or eliminate the damages caused by the dusts in the thermal spray process to workers.
